What is mParivahan?
mParivahan is a free mobile application developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. It enables citizens to store digitally verified copies of their transport documents on their smartphones, eliminating the need to carry physical copies.
The app connects directly to the government's Vahan (vehicle) and Sarathi (driving license) databases, ensuring that all your documents reflect real-time data. When you add your Driving License or Registration Certificate, the app fetches verified information and generates a QR code that traffic authorities can scan for instant authentication.
With over 10 crore downloads, it has become one of the most widely used government utility apps in India. The latest NextGen version adds biometric login, multi-language support, and improved offline access for a better user experience.
What Can You Do With the App?
From storing documents to paying fines, here are the core features that make this app essential for every vehicle owner.
Store a legally valid digital copy of your DL on your phone. It includes your photo, license number, vehicle classes, and a QR code for instant verification by traffic police.
Carry your vehicle Registration Certificate digitally. It shows owner details, engine number, fitness validity, and insurance status, all synced with the Vahan database.
Check pending traffic challans using your vehicle or DL number, view violation details and evidence, then pay directly through the app using UPI, cards, or net banking.
Access driving license services including new applications, renewals, duplicate DL, and international driving permits through the Sarathi portal integration.
Look up any vehicle by its registration number to verify ownership, check pending challans, insurance status, and fitness certificate validity from the Vahan database.
Your documents are protected with device binding, PIN authentication, and QR-based verification. The NextGen version also supports fingerprint and face unlock for faster access.
How to Start Using the App
- Register with your mobile number and verify via OTP
- Set a 6-digit PIN for app security
- Add your DL number and/or vehicle registration number
- Your documents appear with QR codes for verification
The NextGen version supports biometric login (fingerprint/face unlock) for faster access without entering your PIN each time.
Accessing Online Transport Services
For services beyond the mobile app — such as applying for a new license, vehicle registration, paying road tax, or transferring ownership — you can visit the Parivahan Sewa portal at parivahan.gov.in. This official portal handles DL services through Sarathi and vehicle services through Vahan. Our guide pages provide helpful walkthroughs for common tasks on these portals.
Benefits of Digital Transport Documents
Legally Valid
Digital DL and RC on the app are recognized under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. Traffic police across all states accept these as valid proof.
Tamper-Proof Verification
Each document includes a QR code linked to the central database. Scanning the code instantly verifies authenticity, making forged documents impossible.
Always Up to Date
Since documents sync with government databases in real time, any changes to your license or registration are automatically reflected. No need for updated printouts.
Instant Access Anywhere
Never worry about forgetting your physical documents. Your phone is always with you, and the NextGen version supports offline access for times when you lack connectivity.
